Organization Profile:
The Public Health Laboratory tests for diseases of public health important within San Diego County, including lead poisoning and infections caused by bacteria, fungi, parasites, and viruses. Examples include tuberculosis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, coccidioidomycosis (valley fever), giardia, cryptosporidium, hepatitis, HIV. and influenza. The laboratory also conducts environmental testing, including monitoring the water quality of beaches and bays, and tests drinking water, air, food, and beverages. Consultation and training are provided to health care workers in the community, public and environmental health workers, and students. Collaborative research is conducted with biotechnology firms to evaluate newly developed tests.
