Workshop Description
There is so much to learn about your environment. Each day new tools and technologies are becoming available for teachers interested in giving their students more of an inquiry-based approach to learning about their environment using real scientific data. In this workshop you will learn how to use hand-held environment monitoring sensors to measure ultraviolet radiation and see firsthand how well suntan lotion protects. Accompanying this lesson you can be some of the first teachers to test a serious educational video game being developed here at SDSC that allows students to play roles as scientist researchers in the Antarctic studying UV radiation and learn how to collaborate in solving a problem.

You will also be introduced to some exciting ways interactive web-based software is being used to help learn about regional environmental issues important to all of us living in San Diego county. Fly through real-time earthquake data in 3D and explore current and past seismic activity with Google Earth, pan and zoom through a 20 year 'history' of high-resolution imagery of southern California to learn about land use and urban planning, and browse an interactive image atlas of the Tijuana River Watershed to see firsthand how society impacts its surrounding environment. Finally, you'll get some hands-on experience learning how these interactive online activities are created, and get some ideas how you might create your own interactive online instructional activities using Adobe Flash.

Each workshop participant will be provided with their own account on our TeacherTECH Community Portal where they can access all of the lessons and content from this workshop.
