Computer Mapping Workshop Next Week - spaces still available!

Middle School, High School, Community College, Peer Mentors and Teacher Trainer Educators are invited to attend an exciting new Earth Science workshop as part of our TeacherTECH Science Series. This workshop is presented in collaboration with Oregon State University and San Diego Mesa College.

Tuesday 8/11/09 and Wednesday 8/12/09
9:00 am - 3:00 pm
San Diego Supercomputer Center
University of California, San Diego

Workshop Description:

This introductory hands-on two-day workshop is a must for any educator who wants to explore earth science in an intuitive and informative way. We will use GeoMapApp, a free and user-friendly computer mapping software that helps you explore and visualize a broad range of geoscience data: seafloor bathymetry, earthquake data, plate motion, hydrothermal vents, movements of tagged whales, and much more!

You will learn all the basics of GeoMapApp, discover online data sources, and prepare a lesson plan that introduces your students to dynamic opportunities for interactive learning. This research-centered tool has wide applicability to earth science education and is used by middle school and high school teachers and by researchers at institutions across the globe. We will go to the deepest places in the world, and follow the movements of the largest animals on our planet, the great blue whales.

Workshop Content:

The workshop will take participants through an underwater adventure as we explore the last frontiers on our earth, the ocean depths.

Participants to be able to:

1. Expose students to the real world of ocean science -- by showing them that information is more than just facts in a textbook.

2. Teach students the basic concepts of geoscience data visualization.

3. Make maps, graphs and data come alive through display in a virtual earth environment

4. Train your students in the use of computer mapping tools and encourage development of their spatial thinking skills.

Participants will:
* Discover the basics of geosciences through the use of GeoMapApp
* Receive exciting geospatial tools, data sets and materials for the classroom
* Explore current trends in earth and ocean science
* Generate custom maps and import their own data
* Become proficient in using GeoMapApp software
* Create a standards-based and classroom-ready lesson for a topic such as seafloor exploration, satellite tracking of great whales, or marine science research.

Professional development credit will be offered through UCSD Extension. This is a two-quarter-unit course.

Please join us for an exciting and informative session of hands-on learning presented by Eileen Goff, San Diego Mesa College and Michelle Kinzel, Oregon State University.

Registration is free. Space is limited. Please contact Ange Mason at
858-534-5064 or amason@ucsd.edu to reserve your space.
